Men's memory trail in Bugey
About
Moving discoveries in the footsteps of the last world war... followed by beneficial visits to the century-old distillery and the passionate winemakers. A holiday full of paradoxes!
Day 1: Nantua and the Cerdon region
Morning:
Guided tour of the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation de l'Ain. In the heart of an area steeped in history, in the former prison of the town of Nantua, the Musée de la Résistance offers a lively and accessible tour of the Second World War in the Ain and in France.
The various themes are illustrated by an exceptional collection originally assembled by protagonists of the period. Posters, everyday objects, uniforms, eyewitness accounts... perpetuate the work of remembrance.
Continue to Cerdon. You'll pass the Val d'Enfer Monument. This memorial is dedicated to the 700 dead of the Ain and Haut-Jura maquis. Erected on the edge of the D1084, in the wild Val d'Enfer gorge, the monument, sculpted by Charles Machet, surprises all those who travel along this important road. It remains a testimony of gratitude to those who gave their lives for our freedom.
Lunch in a restaurant high above Cerdon.
Afternoon:
Visit Cellier Lingot-Martin * in Poncin to taste the fine, light mousse of the famous Bugey - Cerdon * sparkling wine. Our winemakers are waiting to reveal the secrets of this sparkling rosé wine... Tasting in moderation!
You'll then head back to Belley to check into the Sweet Home 2* hotel.
Dinner at the Zest Urban restaurant next door (direct access to the restaurant bar from the hotel).
Day 2: Southern Bugey and La Maison d'lzieu
Morning:
Guided tour of the Kario Distillery in Belley.
Over a century ago, Brother Henri-Marie, a herbalist with the Confrérie des Frères de la Sainte Famille, perfected a secret formula. No fewer than 32 wild plants gathered in the region gave birth to KARIO, a tonic and restorative drink. After a delicate maceration in oak casks (some of which can hold up to 18,000 liters) and surrounded by the scent of aromatic plants, distillation takes place in traditional steam-heated stills. After the guided tour, you'll be able to sample a wide selection of beneficial herbal beverages.
Lunch at an inn, where you can sample cuisine prepared with fresh, seasonal produce.
Afternoon:
Visit to the Maison d'lzieu, Memorial to exterminated Jewish children.
This place of history and remembrance perpetuates the memory of the Jewish children and adults who found refuge there from May 1943 to the roundup on April 6, 1944. It is committed to the present and looks to the future, encouraging reflection on crimes against humanity and the circumstances that gave rise to them, as well as on intolerance and racism.
