The ruins of Mauchamp castle
About
Mauchamp castle was built between 1343 and 1359, following the fire of Conspectus Tower, 500 metres north. The border of the states belonging to the Earl of Savoie being at the Guiers, St Maurice was a first hand lookout post over the Guiers valley.
Located on top of a cliff, Mauchamp castle has a strategic advantage as it enables its owners to monitor the border between Dauphiné and Savoie.
This castle is said to have been destroyed by Lesdiguières in 1595.
Nowadays, only two towers remain, thanks to ivy climbing between the stones.
