About
Two modern sundials designed by Arcabas in 2008 adorn the church tower. Take a detour on your walk and discover these art works in Rochefort, admiring the landscape of the Guiers plain and the surrounding mountains.
Originally, two sundials were discovered in 2005 during the repair of the church front. Research could not lead to a rebuild of the sundials, that probably dated from the 18th century, because they were too altered, therefore the village of Rochefort decided to build new sundials in 2008.
The theme of "the Aquarius" sundial comes from the huge amount of water in Rochefort. It is about the time that goes by and the source of life.
The dial is italic: it shows the number of hours left before sunset.
It reminds people that their ancestors were peasants and that it was an important information for their night prayer.
Thalès' quote "Time is wise, it reveals everything" comes with the painting.
The second sundial "Emmaüs' pilgrims" illustrates how close the Way of St James is. It represents Emmaüs' pilgrims, an important matter in Arcabas' heart.
The dial indicates the solar hours and includes an enigma related to Rochefort's history.
